Love for Ministry

I love what I do as a missionary here in is a danger to love more the ministry than Jesus. If we give ourselves to ministry, that is, service to God above God we make an idol of ministry.  For this reason I have added to this blog and my heart my core values the first being intimacy with Jesus without it ministry will come from me and I alone have nothing to give to people. Without Christ I can do nothing but in Christ i can do all things.  Love for Christ must come before ministry. Sorry to say I have seen pastors who love their ministry and are so busy in ministry they tell me “I don’t have time to pray or study my Bible” What they begin to give to the people is repetition, old songs, old sermons and dead things to those who follow, it becomes boring to be a Christian. Only Christ gives life and His life only flows from us as we spent time with Him.

My prayer is let me not love my ministry above you JESUS  my all.

Love Christ above all!

Are all Christians Missionaries

Did you know that the word MISSIONARY is not in the Bible, that’s right. The closest word for missionary in the Bible is Apostle. The definition of the word Apostle according to Strongs Hebrew-Greek dictionary is the following.

G649 ἀποστέλλω
apostellō
ap-os-tel’-lo
From G575 and G4724; set apart, that is, (by implication) to send out (properly on a mission) literally or figuratively: – put in, send (away, forth, out), set [at liberty].

In the true sense of the word missionary, not all Christian’s are missionaries. As not all are called to be pastors, not all were called to be Apostles not all are called to be missionaries.

Do all Christians have a mission? YES

Is the great commission for all Christians? YES

Mat 28:19  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mat 28:20  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Is the Great Commission  for all Christians definitely YES!

There are several ways to look at this.

1. We are all called to GO so you must be called to stay where you are because you are already called to GO!  Have you left yet?

2. Or the great commission is directed to the CHURCH and as Paul and Barnabas were set apart to GO the church today must set apart some to GO. Remember the commission is to all nations (all ethnic groups) one missionary can never physically reach all nations so the CHURCH must send out many many missionaries, while the rest pray for and support the ones that GO.

3. All are called to GO and make disciples? YES to your family, neighbors, town or city, state, country and to the utmost parts of the earth. In other words start where you are and as God opens the doors you walk through them.

Any way you want to look at it you have a mission God has given you abilities, gifting, talents, education all to be used in HIS Kingdom. Whether you are a factory worker, doctor, teacher etc you are in the mission field, all around you are lost people. You are an epistle the gospel is written in your heart and life you can preach with your life and sometimes with your mouth.

Missionaries are people too

Never feel sorry for a missionary we are privileged to service the King of Kings! but we are not supermen and women we just serve a SUPER GOD.

  1. We hurt
  2. We get sick
  3. We feel lonely at times
  4. We fail (much more than you will know)
  5. We have disagreements with other missionaries ( the greatest factor in attrition on the mission field is missionaries not getting along. Why? It take people with strong character to reach the missions field, so sometimes we do butt heads.  Hey Paul did!
  6. Missionaries can be territorial. Hey I’m working here you go over there!
  7. Sometimes we spend all day sometimes days waiting in lines to get a piece of paper that gives us permission to ask for another piece of paper so we can apply for permission to stay in a country a month or year more. (RED TAPE)
  8. Most of the time we are the minority. Think about it.
  9. US missionaries if living out of the States for more than six month get no earned income credit and pay taxes and social security total amount. personally When I live in the States for over six months I get money back from IRS but living in Mexico I pay.
  10. Sometimes we make enemies who try to get us kicked out of the country. I have and they have tried, I’m still here.
  11. We take risks sometimes to prosper and sometimes to fail.
  12. We have family issues just like you. We work through them with God just like you do.
  13. A lot of these are negative but the positive far out weigh the negative.
  14. We are privileged in getting to know many beautiful people, beautiful countries, to be used of God to reach out to people with the gospel, people who otherwise would not hear the goodnews.
  15. What a honor to serve the Lord and be sent out by loving brothers and sister from our home country, culture and family.

We are no different than or better than our brothers and sisters in Christ back home just called to do what Christ has called us all to do but in another country, culture and language.

The next question I want to deal with is Are all Christians missionaries?

What is God’s dream for you?

Did you know God has a dream for you?  Yes He really does. We can call it vision, plan or desire but it is God’s not ours. It becomes ours when we began walking with Him and His dream for us.  Others can have a dream for us. Iike we can  have dreams for our own children big dreams and we can have a dreams for ourselves but, we find fulfillment and God size purpose  when we know and walk in God’s dreams for us. When we walk in God’s dream we are transformed, our lives change and people around us are changed, the effect of living God’s dream has a domino effect that can reach thousands.

My cry to God is lead me to your dreams for me. How can I (you) reach His dreams for us.

  • Be open to change
  • Be willing to pay the cost
  • Enjoy the journey
  • Fall in love with God
  • How? Because He first loved you
  • To know Him is to love Him
  • Get to know God
  • His dreams for me are God sized dreams, nothing is impossible with God
  • God’s dreams for me interconnect with others and His dreams for them
  • My dreams can sometimes be selfish God’s dreams for me always include others

Am I (you) living God’s dream?   How do I know?

What general things has He already told me to do?

  1. Love God, love others (my neighbor) This only comes by faith
  2. Go make disciples!  His kingdom come His will be done. His dreams for me involve His kingdom coming to earth through me (you) to other
  3. Rest in God

Do you know how to find God’s dream for you?   Leave a comment!

Types of Missionaries

First I don’t claim to know every kind of missionary but 25 years in missions I can claim to know a few. Also I don’t claim one as being better than the other. There are advantages and disadvantages in every type of organization they might  follow.

1. Denominational missionaries in general follow a set working structure sent down from a hierarchy of leadership and work within the framework of that denomination, especially traditional churches.  They work to build that particular denomination.  Some of these missionary are totally financed through that denomination and have a set budget to follow. I like that part of it! However they must follow guidelines set my that particular denomination. Some missionaries in this category never visit supporting churches except  possibly their own home church. They don’t have to do fund raising because the denomination supports them totally. This is not the rule for all denominational missionary some do have to raise their on support through churches within but not restricted to their own denomination. They are given a budget to reach and can’t go to their field until that budget is raised. Some spend years raise their support base.

2. Missions agency missionaries, I’m one of them.  I am with International Gospel Outreach. Some agencies have raised support for their missionaries but this is almost unheard of these day if support is given to them through the missions agency then much like denominational missionaries they follow guidelines, strategies, protocol etc. set by that missions agency. I do know of one agency that raises the missionaries support but expect him or her to raise their own support then the agencies support is taken away.

What is church planting?

Establishing a group of believers in a particular local who will meet regularly to worship God, study the Holy Bible, fellowship together, pray for one  another and others, share the gospel by witnessing with their lives and words.

  1. Using Paul’s example he traveled seeking out people to share the gospel with, then brought those that believed together to teach them about the Kingdom of God. Sometimes staying a few weeks or months and sometimes years. He stayed two years in Ephesus.  Most places he went he had a team of men and women that worked alongside of him. He always looked for opportunities to share the gospel. An important part of his ministry was follow up, through; revisits when possible and letters to the believers to encourage and exhort. He spent many days and many hours preaching, teaching and praying with tears for the new believers, the new churches. Also a very important part of church planting was the establishment of leaders in the local churches.
  2. Another way of church planting is through local churches and pastors. By motivating local leaders to establish new churches. These new churches can be planted through contacts  in areas where a new church needs to be planted.  Missionaries can encourage and begin evangelistic outreach through campaigns, medical missions, helping in whatever need that community might have. This is how we have seen new churches planted. The leadership is found in the mother church that is planting this new church with the help of a church planting missionary. As time passes leadership in the new church will rise. Discipleship is important in growing new leadership so the new local church doesn’t depend on leadership from the missionary or mother church, but fellowship and networking must be permanent, not control but friendship and consulting. This can become a coaching relationship.

Lead by the Holy Spirit the Spirit of Christ

Act 16:6-10 They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia and were prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the message in the province of Asia. When they came to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia,  but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.  So, bypassing Mysia, they came down to Troas. During the night a vision appeared to Paul: a Macedonian man was standing and pleading with him, “Cross over to Macedonia and help us!” After he had seen the vision, we immediately made efforts to set out for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to evangelize them.

As is other post Act 16 continue to be an important study in being lead by the Spirit.   Two times on my trip to the States I heard messages on Act 16 was God speaking to me, or was it a coincidence.  I think not! View full article »

Can you imagen a city, town or community without a church?

Think about it, especially in the south peoples are use to seeing churches many people go to church and I believe some take the church for granted. Over the years I have been to many places in the world that are without churches. No place to hear the Word of God preached, No place to fellowship with believers, No place to share your joys and sorrows, No place to pray and ask for prayer. Can you imagen your town without a church?

It is soooo exciting to plant a church in a community that has no church and see the people receive Words of hope, Words of faith and Word of salvation and love.

God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that who so ever believe should not perish but have everlasting life.

mule1On a recent trip to a Tojolobal Indian village I was offered a mule to ride back to where I had parked two hours walk away.  Two ladies the day before ask if they could ride in my car back to a town where they lived. Sunday morning a Christian brother brought me the mule but the two ladies also showed up one carrying a baby on her back and the other lady their  luggage. I told the owner of the mule to let one of them ride the mule and I would walk. After some heated conversation the owner insisted I ride the mule the ladies also insisted. The road was difficult and it was hot. I felt bad, real bad that the ladies were walking and I was riding I tried again on the way down the mountain to get the ladies to get on the mule without success.  On arriving  two hours later to my car I waited  for the ladies and they got in my car.
